WHAT IS AN ALMUD?

On plantation tokens, normally coffee plantations an almud is an Arab - Spanish name for a unit of weight (usually 1 bucket full) which used to be measured in Kilos, the European way. On modern times they would have corresponded to 24 pounds of ripe red coffee tree berries or 7 pounds of roasted ground coffee; a novice picker would pick about 4-5 buckets, good picker would do about 7-9 buckets, experts would pick even more.

 WHAT IS A REAL?

Mostly on merchant tokens, but sometimes on plantation tokens as well, 1 Peso equaled to 8 reales of 12.5 cents each: for example: 1/8 of Real (an Octavo) which was locally called an "Ochavo" or simply "chavo" 1/4 real = 3.25 cents, 1/2 real = 6.5 cents, 1 real = 12.5 cents, 2 reales = 25 cents, 4 reales = 50 cents, 6 reales = 75 cents, 8 reales = 1 Peso, and so on. In 1869 the Spanish coinage became decimal with the arrival of the peseta, with 5 Pesetas equal to 1 Peso (0.20c of a $1), following the European economic union agreement (where most "Continental European" (UK never entered this union) had all coinage made same size, same silver / copper content, equal value, etc, like 5 Mark = 1 Thaler, or 5 Lira = 1 Talero, or 5 Franc = 1 Gourde, etc) but on most of the Spanish Caribbean the coinage kept being named reales. In Puerto Rico even today, locals still call the cent a "chavo" , the quarter a "peseta" (although now 25c) and a dollar a "peso".

We’ll do everything we can to help you and get your 5 stars. Some medals or coins may be shipped inside plastic capsules as a courtesy of ours. Because you paid for a medal or coin, and not for an acrylic capsule, we are not to be held responsible over capsules received cracked or broken. Medals received from the factory will feature minor scratches or nicks over which we shouldn't be held responsible. Likewise, vintage items we sell may feature imperfections due to age, tear, and wear, which may not reflect on the photos. Due to this, we will only replace or provide refund on items received greatly damaged.
