In the 16 part series "Taffies. The Welsh Volunteers Of The International Brigades In Spain, 1936 To 1939", Thomas Lewis Jones sets out to describe the social, economic, and political circumstances that had a bearing on the lives of the Welsh volunteers of the 15th International Brigade, and of Welsh volunteers who served in other elements of the government forces in the Spanish Civil War. Jones considers the particular experience of warfare of the Welsh volunteers in Spain and places that experience in the general context of military and political affairs at the time.
In this, the third book of the series, the acquaintance of the people of Wales with military affairs, in various ways, over the years, is considered. Attitudes to war are discussed. Some Welsh International Brigade volunteers had experience of military service before going to Spain, and basic information concerning this aspect of affairs is presented in the form of a table.
Scrupulously researched and packed with fascinating material and thought provoking argument, this work keeps up the high standard set by the preceding two volumes.
