The harpsichord has held a surprising allure for
20th-century composers. While it's never come close to the omnipresence
it enjoyed in the 17th and 18th centuries, it's been written for by
quite a large number of composers in the last hundred years - I could
name a dozen such harpsichord concertos without breaking a sweat. On
this out of print 1999 Northwestern University CD Paul Rey Klecka offers
us works of two contemporary American composers. Timothy Broege chooses
to reflect on the instrument's traditions, filling his five works with
Baroque-era tropes and motifs - though he juxtaposes them with advanced
harmonies and nervous 20th-century gestures. The two pieces by M.
William Karlins stay mostly 20th-century, though even here there are
some anachronistic moments (or maybe it's just that it's difficult to
play the harpsichord without at least sometimes evoking Baroque music!).
