The Park Bridge Ironworks is one of the most important industrial archaeology landscapes in North West England and one of the few areas where the remains of the iron and coal industries can still be seen today. Owned and run by the Lees family for nearly 180 years from 1785 until its closure in 1963, the remains of 36 sites associated with the ironworks, its neighbouring factory community, the Ashton Canal and the adjacent coal mines are spread along two kilometres of the Medlock Valley on the border between Tameside and Oldham. This guide to the archaeology and history of the area discusses the rise and fall of the ironworks, the recent archaeological excavations and places Park Bridge in its regional context. The Old Stables belonging to the ironworks is now a Heritage Centre, detailing the social and industrial history of Park Bridge, from where a heritage trail can be followed around the industrial archaeology remains.
