John Dawson lived and taught in Sedbergh, Yorkshire. Because he was a renowned educator who prepared students for the grueling Cambridge Mathematical Tripos, many of his books eventually found their way into university libraries or Yorkshire estates.
This is Volume 1 and volume 2 (Second Edition, 1757) of Elements of Mathematics, written by John Muller, who was the first professor of fortification and artillery at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Muller is a highly important figure; he is often considered the "father of British military engineering" because his textbooks standardized the training for British artillery officers and engineers during the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War.
The mention of "J. Millan near Whitehall" on the title page refers to John Millan, a prominent bookseller of the era who specialised in official military lists and texts.
