In 1985, the Franklin Mint issued proof sets for Panama. Krause lists a total mintage of 765 sets, and cites the 1983, 1984, and 1985 1/2 Balboas as UNAUTHORIZED. In addition, a few 1/10 and 1/2 Balboa proof coins were rumored to be struck and sold separately, A few of the 1985 sets were broken up with individual coins ocasionally offered for sale. The specific origin of this coin is unknown, nor is the exact mintage known. All examples were minted in proof only. This example is in proof condition, but it's copper nickel content does not provide the brilliant finish we often associate with coins stuck in silver. Buyers are urged to examine the photos before bidding on this rare coin.
