Founded in 1912 by Walter A. Sheaffer in Fort Madison, Iowa, Sheaffer became one of the most influential names in the history of fountain pens. What began as a small American pen company would grow into one of the world's leading manufacturers of writing instruments, earning a reputation for innovation, craftsmanship, and distinctive design.
Walter Sheaffer, originally a jeweler, revolutionized the fountain pen industry by patenting the lever-filling system, a practical innovation that made fountain pens easier and more convenient to use. The success of this invention helped establish Sheaffer as a major force in the rapidly growing writing instrument market.
Throughout the twentieth century, Sheaffer introduced many iconic models and groundbreaking technologies. The company became known for legendary pens such as the Balance, Triumph, Snorkel, Imperial, Targa, and Legacy series. Many of these models introduced innovative filling systems, unique nib designs, and streamlined styling that influenced fountain pen design for decades.
One of Sheaffer's most recognizable achievements was the development of the Triumph nib, a conical nib design that offered exceptional durability and smooth writing performance. The company also gained widespread recognition for the Snorkel filling system of the 1950s, an engineering achievement that allowed users to fill their pens without submerging the nib in ink.
During the golden age of fountain pens, Sheaffer stood alongside Parker, Waterman, and Esterbrook as one of America's premier pen manufacturers. Its pens became popular among students, professionals, executives, and collectors, earning a reputation for dependable performance and elegant styling.
Sheaffer Targa 1005
The Sheaffer Targa 1005 is a classic fountain pen from Sheaffer's highly regarded Targa series, introduced in the 1970s. The Targa became known for its sleek, contemporary styling, excellent build quality, and wide range of finishes, making it one of Sheaffer's most recognizable modern-era fountain pen collections.
The 1005 is particularly appealing for its clean and understated design. Its slim, cylindrical profile gives it a sophisticated appearance while maintaining excellent balance in the hand. The Targa's streamlined shape also reflects the design philosophy of the 1970s, when fountain pens were increasingly being created as both functional writing instruments and stylish everyday accessories.
One of the Targa's defining characteristics is its inlaid nib design. Rather than sitting visibly on top of the section like a traditional fountain pen nib, the nib is integrated into the pen's section, creating a smooth and streamlined transition between the nib and body. This became one of Sheaffer's signature design features and contributes to the Targa's distinctive appearance.
The Targa series was also produced in a remarkable variety of finishes and nib specifications over its long production history. This variety has made different Targa references particularly interesting to collectors, as seemingly similar models can have notable differences in finish, trim, and nib configuration.
Sheaffer 14K Inlaid nib
The Sheaffer Targa 14K Gold Inlaid Nib is one of the defining features of the Targa series, combining Sheaffer's innovative inlaid-nib design with the refined feel of a gold writing point.
Crafted from 14K gold, the nib offers excellent corrosion resistance, durability, and a comfortable writing feel. The gold construction provides a pleasant degree of natural cushioning while maintaining the firm and controlled character for which Sheaffer nibs are known.
Unlike a traditional fountain pen nib that sits on top of the section, the inlaid nib is integrated directly into the front of the pen, creating the sleek, uninterrupted profile that became one of Sheaffer's signature designs. This construction not only gives the Targa its distinctive appearance but also provides a stable and precise writing platform.
The nib is designed primarily for smooth, consistent everyday writing, offering reliable ink flow and excellent control. It is not intended to be a flexible nib; instead, its strength lies in its precision, stability, and refined writing feel.

2026 Update
⚠ Attention: High-Duty Regions (LATAM)
For buyers in the following regions, import fees in 2026 are significantly higher than the global average. These fees are determined by your government and are not included in the shipping price.
🇧🇷 BRAZIL: Combined taxes (II, PIS/COFINS, and ICMS) often reach 60–80% of the total value. A valid CPF (Tax ID) is strictly required for all shipments.
🇨🇱 CHILE: The duty-free threshold is only $30 USD. Orders above this are subject to 6% duty + 19% VAT on the total cost (including shipping).
🇦🇷 ARGENTINA: Strict "door-to-door" regulations apply. Buyers may need to confirm receipt on the AFIP website to clear customs.
Global Shipping Status
USA: Standard Shipping via Japan Post remains suspended. All US-bound orders ship via Express Courier (DDP) to comply with current US import regulations.
TURKEY: All orders ship via Japan Post EMS ($30 USD). Turkish customs require a Customs Broker; these fees are the buyer's responsibility and are non-refundable if the package is rejected.
RESTRICTED: We are currently unable to deliver to Russia, North Korea, Belarus, or Ukraine.
Express-Only Regions — $75 USD Flat Rate
Due to current logistics challenges, shipping to the following countries is $75 USD via Express Shipping by default:
As of late 2025, the US "Duty-Free" allowance was suspended. To ensure a seamless delivery:
Final Price Guarantee: Your checkout total includes the 20% US Import Duty, the $20 Government Surcharge, and all brokerage fees.
No Surprise Bills: You will not receive an invoice from the courier (UPS/DHL) for additional taxes.
For International Customers (Non-US): Standard (DDU)
We ship Delivered Duty Unpaid (DDU) for all other countries.
Buyer Responsibility: You are responsible for local VAT, GST, and duties.
Payment Tip: Pay your duties online via the link sent by the carrier (UPS/DHL) to avoid the $12.00 in-person surcharge (ICOD fee) and speed up delivery by 1–2 days.
Shipping Transparency & Online Payment
100% Prepaid Transport: We pay 100% of the international transport fees to the carrier (UPS, DHL, or Japan Post) before your item leaves Japan. In 99% of cases, your order will reach your door with no further delivery fees — only government duties apply.
How to Pay Your Customs Duties: When your package arrives in your country, the carrier (UPS or DHL) will contact you via SMS or Email with a payment link. We strongly recommend paying online through the official carrier website immediately.
Avoid "Payment on Delivery" Surcharges:
› UPS "ICOD" Fee: UPS now charges an additional $12.00 surcharge for import charges collected at the door. This fee is waived if you pay online.
› DHL Disbursement Savings: DHL offers a discounted processing rate for duties paid via their "On Demand Delivery" portal. Paying in person results in a higher "Cash Handling" fee.
› Japan Post EMS: Your local post office (e.g., USPS) may charge a small nominal fee ($5–$10) for "Postage Due" or final-mile processing.
Important Policies
› Address: Please input your shipping address in the English alphabet only.
