Snoopy

Snoopy as the Red Baron was awidely recognised symbol within United States Air Force aviation culture, especially from the Vietnam War era onward.

Aircrews adopted the character as a light-hearted emblem of fighter-pilot identity, courage, and the tradition of dogfighting.

The image appeared frequently as morale art on flight jackets, helmets, ready-room walls, unit dayrooms and aircraft nose art.

For many pilots and crewmen, Snoopy’s imaginary battles in his doghouse “aircraft” captured the humour and bravado associated with flying combat missions. By the late 1960s, the character had become one of the most familiar unofficial mascots in the Air Force, representing the spirit of the fighter ace and serving as a cultural touchstone among aviators well into the post-Vietnam years
