The book centres on the famous opening maxim, "Heaven helps those who help themselves". Smiles firmly believed that genuine individual growth cannot be produced by state laws or external institutions, but must instead sprout entirely from within. Readers looking at the subtitle often expect drawn graphics or woodcuts. However, in the 19th-century context, "illustrations" refers to biographical sketches, anecdotes, and case studies. Smiles uses the real-world life stories of more than 750 historical figures as living proof of what individual willpower can achieve. These profiles function like quick, sharp character busts rather than drawn pictures, detailing exact moments where perseverance conquered severe adversity
