Gettysburg was a rural crossroads town of 2,400 that became the
accidental site of a major civil war battle on the first three days of July 1863.
About 50 thousand soldiers died in this epic battle!
The NPS offers a large new visitors center (2009) that includes a museum,
cafe, and bus tour terminal. The NPS has purchased most of the battlefield
lands and leases back the property for crops that were utilized in 1863. The
battlefield has many large monuments from veterans organizations and states.
