Antique Sterling Silver Finger Guard Thimble English * Circa 1850 This little
solid sterling silver (tested)
finger guard or shield was worn on
the
index finger of the left hand and used to protect that hand from the
needle point as
it
was pushed through the fabric being stitched. A regular thimble was
worn on the other hand to push the needle. It has a faceted rim, a hand engraved band
and a smooth top.
The condition
is excellent,
crisp and in round with no holes or even scratches. It was made before
English silversmiths were required by
law to hallmark and pay duty on small items. It's about an American child's size 5 (13.5 mm diameter opening). A variety of English finger guards are shown on p. 119 of Edwin Holmes book Thimbles.
