Antique Embroidered Velvet Strawberry Emery Cushion

English * Circa 1890

This colorful little piece is in the form of a fat strawberry. It's hand made of velvet and has been embroidered all over with yellow silk seeds. The green sepals at the top are embroidered in wool and a three-part stem is made of wire wrapped with green wool

The condition is excellent with no loss, tears or other or damage. The strawberry measures about 2 1/4" high (including the stems) and 1 1/4" wide. It could be used as a pin cushion but is heavy and filled with emery powder.

Emeries were used to sharpen and polish the steel needles of the age. Emery powder is a fine grit and the needles were pushed in and out of the cushion several times. It also removed rust. It was bought in England.
