Antique Mauchline Ware Spool Case

Scottish * Circa 1890

This handsome thread box was made of sycamore wood in Mauchline Scotland, probably by the W. & A. Smith Co. The top has an applied transfer print of "Culzean Castle" on the west coast of Scotland. A gold leaf design borders the top. The front says "Made of Wood which grew near Alloway Kirk on the Banks of Doon". Inside the top is a label showing Clark & Co. Anchor Mills in Paisley (Scotland). Inside there are six wooden pegs to hold thread spools, and each has a hole beside it for the thread to be drawn through. The holes are labeled on the outside with the size of the cotton within.

The box is in excellent condition with a few tiny dings but no chips, cracks or loss. The print designs and label are intact, and it has the original paper on the bottom.  It measures 4 1/4" long x 2 3/4" wide and 2" high.
