Binding by Boradbere (of Southampton) in a half leather and cloth binding over boards with raised bands to the spine and simple black stamped designs to the panels with red leather labels for the title and author being in gilt upon them, Sir Thomas Longmore's armorial bookplate to the front pastedown this being marble paper as is the first end paper. Page edges are dipped in red ( Red was usually reserved for Religious texts)
Title page + XX + 516pp including index + 2 fold out genealogical tables and 1 full page + Map of Arabia fold out with "Temple at Mecca" as an insert to the map. + fold out plan of Mecca and view of Mecca on the same sheet. All in good condition. Binders ticket ot the internal of the back board. Pages are clean throughout.
Sir Thomas Longmore (1816–1895) was an elite, highly decorated British military icon. The Crimean War Veteran: He served as a frontline regimental surgeon with the 19th Regiment of Foot during the Crimean War (1854–1855). He famously survived severe frostbite while tending to casualties every single day of the Siege of Sevastopol, and fought at the Battles of Alma, Inkerman, and Balaclava. Royal Surgeon to Queen Victoria: He was later appointed Professor of Military Surgery at Netley Hospital and served as the Honorary Surgeon to Queen Victoria. Medical Innovator: Longmore was a pioneering authority on battlefield trauma, publishing essential 19th-century medical manuals on gunshot wounds and battlefield bicycle-ambulances. He was knighted by the Queen in 1886
