Wonderful lot of two early Byrd Antarctic Expedition polar postal-history covers, both connected with Admiral Richard E. Byrd’s famous Antarctic expeditions. The first cover is a 1928 Byrd Antarctic Expedition Paquebot / ship-mail cover connected with the S.S. City of New York, the vessel used by Byrd’s expedition. It is addressed to Mr. James Bradley, 25 Hunt St., Andersons Bay, Dunedin, N.Z. and bears an attached pair of 1¢ Canal Zone coil stamps. The stamps clearly read “Canal Zone,” making this a particularly interesting postal-history item. The cover has a New York, Nov. 1, 1928 postmark, and the reverse carries a printed expedition cachet reading “Byrd Antarctic Expedition” and “S.S. City of New York – Dunedin, N.Z.” This ship connection is why the Paquebot designation is especially important.

The second cover is a 1934 Byrd Antarctic Expedition / Little America, Antarctica cover, bearing the 3¢ Byrd Antarctic Expedition stamp and postmarked Little America, Antarctica, Jan. 31, 1934. It is addressed to Master Jack Culver, 54 King St., Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada, with a handwritten pencil note reading “South Pole Cover.” A very interesting pair for collectors of polar exploration, Antarctic postal history, Byrd Expedition material, Canal Zone stamps, coil stamps, Paquebot covers, ship mail, exploration ephemera, and S.S. City of New York material.

Condition: both covers show age, toning, handling wear, edge wear, and small stains as photographed. The 1934 Little America cover has heavier wear and roughness along the edges/corners. Please review all photos carefully, as they form part of the description. A scarce and displayable two-piece polar postal-history group, with excellent connection to Byrd’s Antarctic expeditions and the S.S. City of New York.
