Every once in a while Gibson accidentally lets one escape the factory that makes the Custom Shop nervously glance over the fence and mutter, "...well, that's awkward."

Ladies and gentlemen... this is one of those guitars.

This 2023 Gibson Les Paul Standard '60s Figured is wearing a Honey Gloss Nitro finish over what can only be described as a completely unreasonable flamed maple top. Seriously... I've photographed a mountain of Custom Shop Les Pauls over the years, and I'm not convinced this one got the memo that it wasn't invited to that party.

The flame doesn't just move—it performs. Tilt it a few degrees and the top changes personality like it has its own mood ring. One second it's classy. The next second it's practically screaming, "Play the intro to Sweet Child O' Mine!"

Speaking of which... if Slash's legendary Appetite Les Paul and a pristine modern Gibson had a child that was raised on vitamins, fresh strings, and compliments... this would be it.

This isn't relic'd.
It hasn't been "lovingly gigged."
It doesn't have "honest player wear."

It has absolutely none of that.

It's cleaner than your search history after your wife walks into the room.

I'm around a lot of Les Pauls.

A lot.

Every now and then one lands on the photo table that makes me stop, stare for a minute, and quietly say...

"Well... that's just showing off."

This is that guitar.

If Gibson had quietly slipped a Custom Shop serial number on the back of this headstock, I don't think anyone would've questioned it.

It's that good.

Fair warning, though...

Once you own a Les Paul with a top like this, you'll start judging every other Les Paul you see.

Your friends will hand you theirs.

You'll smile politely.

Inside you'll be thinking...

"Yeah... it's nice."

Then you'll go home, open this case, and remember why you bought this one instead.

Good luck finding another Standard with a top that can make Custom Shop guitars feel self-conscious.
