John Mellencamp Claude Akins Indiana Quartz Geode Provenance Cabinet Specimen

Natural Indiana Quartz Geode with Original Provenance from the Filming of Falling from Grace

This extraordinary natural quartz geode is far more than a beautiful mineral specimen—it is a remarkable piece of geological, cinematic, and collecting history. Accompanied by its original handwritten provenance note, the geode was collected near Bedford, Indiana, while actor Claude Akins was on location during the filming of John Mellencamp’s 1992 feature film Falling from Grace. The handwritten note, signed “Charley,” preserves the story of its discovery and transforms this specimen into a fascinating crossover collectible that bridges the worlds of natural history and Hollywood.

The geode displays a rugged, naturally weathered exterior that opens into a breathtaking crystal-lined cavity filled with sparkling quartz crystals. Thousands of lustrous crystal faces shimmer brilliantly as they catch the light, creating exceptional depth, brilliance, and natural beauty. The warm earthy exterior contrasts beautifully with the dazzling interior, making this an eye-catching cabinet specimen that is equally appealing to mineral collectors, movie memorabilia enthusiasts, Indiana history collectors, and lovers of unique conversation pieces.

One especially captivating natural feature is a heart-shaped cavity visible on the reverse side of the geode. Formed entirely by nature over millions of years, this distinctive feature adds even more individuality and charm to an already fascinating specimen. Combined with its sparkling crystal interior, documented provenance, and remarkable journey, it makes this a truly memorable one-of-a-kind collectible.

Included with this offering are the natural quartz geode, the original handwritten provenance note signed “Charley,” the vintage presentation box, and the original “J. Simon” identification tag. Together they tell the complete story of this remarkable specimen and preserve its documented history exactly as it has been cared for over the years.

Scientific Information

This specimen is a natural quartz geode collected near Bedford, Lawrence County, Indiana. Geodes formed millions of years ago when mineral-rich groundwater filled naturally occurring cavities within sedimentary rock. Over immense spans of time, successive layers of chalcedony and sparkling quartz crystals crystallized inside the hollow cavity, creating the spectacular crystal-lined interior visible today. Southern Indiana is internationally recognized among mineral collectors for producing beautiful quartz geodes from Mississippian-age limestone formations.
