KATO N Gauge ED78-1 Early Type JR Specification 3080-2

The ED78 was developed specifically for use on the Ou Main Line, Senzan Line, and Banetsu West Line. These lines feature steep gradients, most notably the Itaya Pass, which connects Fukushima with Yamagata and Akita, eventually reaching Aomori.

Introduced when the section over Itaya Pass was converted from DC to AC electrification in 1968, the ED78 served as a mainline locomotive for passenger and freight trains. It famously hauled the sleeper limited express “Akebono” and 50 Series passenger cars.
