Condition & Testing

Pulled from working enterprise infrastructure and fully tested on server-grade hardware. Verified via SMART data — no bad sectors, no reallocated sectors, 93% life/endurance remaining based on TBW metrics.

This is a U.2 (SFF-8639) NVMe drive — it will NOT fit a standard SATA/SAS backplane or a regular desktop motherboard. Requires a U.2-enabled server bay or a PCIe-to-U.2 adapter card. Please confirm compatibility before buying.

Why U.2 NVMe for Your Homelab / ESXi Host

→Native NVMe performance far exceeds SATA/SAS SSDs — ideal for VMware ESXi datastores, vSAN caching tier, and Proxmox/Unraid NVMe pools.
→High Endurance Technology (HET) MLC — built for sustained enterprise write workloads, not consumer bursts.
→Hot-swap U.2 form factor — designed for live insertion in Dell PowerEdge, HP ProLiant, and Supermicro NVMe backplanes.
→Ideal for small office / SOHO virtualization hosts needing low-latency shared storage without SAN complexity.

HET MLC vs Newer 3D TLC NVMe — Why Endurance Still Matters

Newer TLC-based NVMe drives (e.g. Intel's P4510 or P4600 generation) offer higher raw capacity and IOPS, but rate lower on sustained endurance — the P4510 around 1 drive-write-per-day, and the P4600 around 2.9 drive-writes-per-day. The P3700's High Endurance Technology MLC NAND is rated up to 17 drive-writes-per-day — up to 17x the sustained write endurance of these newer, cheaper alternatives. For workloads dominated by heavy, continuous writes — ZFS SLOG/ZIL, database WAL journals, Ceph journals, or write-heavy VM caching tiers — that endurance headroom matters more than peak sequential throughput or raw capacity. If your workload is read-heavy or capacity-focused, a newer TLC drive at a lower price may genuinely suit you better; if it's write-intensive, this remains the stronger long-term choice.

Compatibility

Requires a U.2 (SFF-8639) NVMe bay or a PCIe-to-U.2 adapter card. This will not connect to a standard SATA or SAS port. Confirmed compatible with: Dell PowerEdge (NVMe backplane models), HP ProLiant Gen9/Gen10 NVMe bays, Supermicro NVMe chassis, and desktop/workstation builds using a PCIe U.2 adapter (common for TrueNAS, Proxmox, ESXi, and Unraid NVMe pool builds). Not a drop-in replacement for SATA or 2.5" SAS bays.

Ideal Use Cases

✓VMware ESXi Datastore/vSAN
✓Proxmox / TrueNAS NVMe Pool
✓Unraid Cache Pool (NVMe)
✓SOHO Virtualization Host
✓Database / High-IOPS Workloads
✓Dell/HP/Supermicro NVMe Bays
✕Standard SATA Motherboards
✕Basic SAS-only Backplanes
