Description

A Late Qing Dynasty Chinese wedding casket, masterfully crafted during the reigns of the Guangxu and Xuantong Emperors (c. 1880–1910).

This ceremonial dowry chest is fashioned from richly figured hardwood, displaying the restrained elegance, precise joinery and refined craftsmanship that distinguished the finest domestic furnishings of the late Imperial period.

The casket is of robust octagonal form and retains its original removable crest rail, deeply carved Double Happiness (囍) panel, original brass strengthening bands and beautifully matured oxblood patina.

Every component reflects traditional Chinese cabinetmaking techniques, with hand-cut mortise-and-tenon construction, individually peened brass fittings and finely hand-finished surfaces throughout.

The front is dominated by the auspicious Double Happiness (囍) character enclosed within an elegant cloud-form reserve bordered by a continuous key-fret motif.

This revered symbol has represented joy, prosperity, fertility and enduring marital harmony for centuries, firmly identifying the casket as an important ceremonial wedding and dowry object.

The removable crest rail is a sophisticated feature found on high-quality examples, allowing secure transport while enhancing the architectural profile of the casket.

Internally, the carefully hand-constructed octagonal chamber remains beautifully preserved, displaying the precision and attention to detail associated with elite southern Chinese workshops.

Over more than a century, the original finish has developed an extraordinary depth and lustre, producing the deep rich blood-red patina prized by collectors of authentic Qing Dynasty hardwood furniture.
