KATO's completed N-gauge train set of the E8 Series Yamagata Shinkansen "Tsubasa" (7-car special edition).

This model reproduces the G2 formation belonging to the JR East Yamagata Shinkansen Rolling Stock Center. The sleek "arrow line" nose with headlights positioned on both shoulders and the elegant body colors inspired by Yamagata Prefecture’s prefectural bird, the mandarin duck, and prefectural flower, the safflower, are beautifully captured.

• Reproduces the G2 formation belonging to the JR East Yamagata Shinkansen Rolling Stock Center.
• Front end features the distinctive “arrow line” design with headlights on both shoulders.
• Body colors inspired by Yamagata’s prefectural bird (mandarin duck) and flower (safflower) are beautifully reproduced.
• Pantograph cover with fins fitted only to the pantograph arm mounting side is accurately modeled.
• Head and tail lights illuminate; Car 11 (E811) is equipped with a light-off switch.
• Headlights use granular LEDs; taillights reproduce the six-light cluster above the cab.
• Equipped with a slotless motor for smooth, quiet running.
• Car 11 (E811) has a front coupling mechanism and no traction tires, allowing coupling with the E5 Series just like the real train.
• Side destination displays are printed on a black background; destination display stickers are included.
• Includes a small relayer.
• All 7 cars are stored in a bookcase-style package.

About the Actual Train

The E8 Series is a new train for the Yamagata Shinkansen that began commercial operation in March 2024. Based on the E6 Series, it was developed under the concept of “a train that weaves rich culture and hearts together,” and features improvements to support diverse travel needs, such as large luggage storage in all cars and expanded wheelchair spaces.

The exterior design follows the previous Yamagata Shinkansen style, using three colors: purple (Oshidori Purple), yellow (Safflower Yellow), and white (Zao Bianco), combined with the sharp arrow-line nose profile. Between Tokyo and Fukushima it runs coupled with the E5 Series “Yamabiko,” operating at a maximum speed of 300 km/h.
