Coppa’s Restaurant, a legendary Italian eatery from San Francisco's golden age. The famous Coppa's Restaurant (also known as the Black Cat Cafe). It was opened in 1904 by an Italian immigrant named Giuseppe "Papa" Coppa.

The original restaurant sat on the ground floor of the historic Montgomery Block building (known colloquially as the "Monkey Block") the exact site where the Transamerica Pyramid stands today.

Coppa's quickly became the unofficial headquarters for San Francisco's turn-of-the-century "Bohemian Set", a tight-knit community of avant-garde artists, writers, and poets including Jack London, George Sterling, and Maynard Dixon.The Murals: In 1905, these free-spirited artist patrons decided to cover the restaurant's plain white walls with elaborate chalk crayon murals. A prominent feature of these decorations was a long, continuous border of stenciled black cats dancing along the perimeter of the ceiling.

The marching black cats were painted by the famous long haired artist Xavier Martinez. He based the design on Le Chat Noir (The Black Cat), a famous bohemian cabaret in Paris where he had previously studied art.

The black cats became so iconic that Coppa nicknamed the restaurant "The Black Cat" and incorporated the design into his custom porcelain plates and platters.

Miraculously, the building survived the devastating April 18, 1906 earthquake, but looters destroyed the cafe's interior.

Coppa eventually relocated to Pine Street, commissioning new murals where a fresh row of cats was stenciled this time marching in the exact opposite direction.
