Sadly Sylvia Townsend Warner did not write the Dorset guide in this series (that was Aubrey de Selincourt), but this volume has some lovely writing particularly in the section on Wells, where the doors in the West Front are described as looking like "three mouseholes in a skirting" or where "even when one has called up half a dozen black-hearted Canons, whose children defy them, whose dinners disagree with them, whose summer evenings are ravaged by money troubles or religious doubts, one's senses continue to assure one that nobody could really be totally unhappy in Wells."
