Velvet Bean (Mucuna pruriens) is a vigorous tropical legume valued for its protein-rich seeds and its important role as a soil-improving cover crop, also known globally as Cowitch, Cowhage, or Monkey Tamarind. In Indonesia it is widely known as Koro Benguk, a traditional legume commonly used to produce fermented foods such as tempe benguk. The plant grows as a fast-climbing vine that thrives in warm tropical climates and can quickly cover trellises, fences, or surrounding vegetation. Its pods are slightly curved and covered with fine hairs when mature, containing several large seeds that range in color from brown to black. After proper processing or fermentation, the seeds develop a rich, nutty flavor and become suitable for human consumption. Due to its vigorous growth, nitrogen-fixing capability, and usefulness in soil fertility improvement, Velvet Bean is widely cultivated for food, animal feed, green manure, and sustainable farming systems.
