This is a beautifully crafted Japanese Noh mask known as "Ko-omote", which is the most iconic and celebrated female mask in traditional Noh theater.
About Ko-omote: The character "Ko" in this context conveys a sense of daintiness, youth, and innocence. It represents a young, pure woman (often goddesses, fairies, or noble ladies). The features follow classical Japanese aesthetic standards from the Heian period, including blackened teeth (ohaguro), shaved and repainted eyebrows, and an elegant hairline.
The Magic of "Neutral Expression": The defining trait of a high-quality Noh mask is its ability to change expressions based on the tilt of the performer's head and the lighting. Tilting down slightly evokes a subtle sadness, while looking up creates a faint, ethereal smile.
