Overview

This International Post issue features the official mammal emblems of four Australian states and territories: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

The Stamps

$3.45 Platypus, NSW

The Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) became the mammal emblem for New South Wales in 1971. A semi-aquatic monotreme, the Platypus is found in freshwater environments in all eastern states, including Tasmania.

$3.75 Koala, Qld

Also in 1971, the Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) was proclaimed the faunal emblem of Queensland. Endemic to eucalyptus woodlands of eastern Australia, from the tropics to the cool temperate south, the Koala is listed as endangered in Queensland, New South Wales and the ACT.

$4.40 Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat, SA

The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons) was adopted by the South Australian Government as its mammal emblem in 1970. The smallest of the three wombat species, it is found in scattered areas of semiarid scrub and mallee from the eastern Nullarbor Plain to the New South Wales border.

$5.15   Red Kangaroo, NT

The largest of all kangaroo species and the largest marsupial in the world, the Red Kangaroo (Osphranter rufus) inhabits arid plains country, low open woodlands and deserts in all mainland states and in the Northern Territory, where in 1975 it was named the territory’s mammal emblem.
