Map Description

·  John Speed's 1611 map of the County of Essex is a fine example of his work. The southern border of Essex is marked by the Thames, while the River Lee on the eastern border separates it from London. Essex appears quite wooded with many deer parks. There is a plan of Colchester with a key to the sites. The old Roman town and three coins are depicted above the plan showing the heads of Emperor Constantine and his parents. The coats of arms of the Earls of Essex flank the left of the map

John Speed, a tailor's son from Cheshire, is perhaps, the most famous of British cartographers and one of the earliest. Whilst in his 50's, aided by his patron, Sir Fulke Greville, he produced "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain", a book of county maps to accompany a history of Great Britain.
