The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

Originally published in 1939, this is a vintage 1964 Bantam Books paperback printing.  The Grapes of Wrath follows the Joad Family during the Great Depression as they are forced by the Dust Bowl to abandon their farm and migrate west, experiencing exploitation, hunger, and violence in the search for work.

Condition: Good. Typical shelf wear for its age with some fading, light staining, and heavy creasing to the covers and spine, as shown in pictures. No major chips or tears. Cover artwork is still vibrant and binding is reasonably tight with no loose pages. Inside pages are lightly tanned and with no markings. There is a sizeable chip out of the top of the first page and what may be some nibble marks along the bottom right corner of the textblock. It definitely looks and feels like the vintage 60 year old paperback that it is.

Censorship of this Book: While it's now considered an American classic, when it was published it faced tremendous controversy and push back because of its graphic depictions of poverty and capitalism as well as 'vulgarity', sex, and violence. Many schools and libraries removed the book under pressure from the ag industry and other groups.

📖 Resistance Through Reading!

I'm a fierce advocate of the right to read. I believe reading is an essential way that people of all ages learn about ideas, identities, and experiences both similar and different from their own, and that we must resist any attempts at censorship - so I'm highlighting these books with a Banned, Challenged & Censored shop category:

  • Build your own bundle of 3+ books from this store category & get 20% off! If you'd like any suggestions, I would LOVE to recommend some themed combinations for you.
