During World War II, the Japanese occupation forces in the Philippines issued their own fiat currency, later known as Japanese invasion money. Possession of guerrilla-issued notes was outlawed, and anyone found with them could be arrested or executed. Filipinos mockingly called the occupation currency “Mickey Mouse money” because of its low value, often needing bags full of bills just to buy basic goods. Prices skyrocketed - at one point, 75 pesos could buy only one duck egg, and a small box of matches cost more than 100 pesos. 

The Japanese-issued bills were also used by American psychological warfare units, who overprinted them with messages like “The Co-Prosperity Sphere: What is it worth?” and dropped them over occupied areas to undermine Japanese influence. Toward the end of the war, the currency experienced extreme hyperinflation, leading to the release of rapidly increasing denominations.
