The sequel to the author's Two kings of Uganda. Ashe, after an absence of some four years, returned to Uganda in 1891 under the auspices of the Church Missionary Society. He had already experienced the savagery of the reigns of Mutesa I and of Mwanga, and the history of their times is recapitulated. In the remainder of this book Ashe tells the story of the intrigue and plotting among the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Muslim factions in the Kabaka's court, and gives a critical account of the part played by the British government and businessmen. Ashe was a natural writer, and his story is as fresh to read today as when it was published. (Uganda; Collison.)

Classic analysis of the events which led to the declaration of the Uganda Protectorate in 1895. Among other things, Ashe—who was Acting Secretary of the Church Missionary Society in Uganda-maintains "that the Uganda troubles of 1892-93 were due in some measure to the uncertainty entertained in Uganda as to the ultimate action of England with regard to withdrawal." Includes biographical sketches of many Imperial British East Africa Company officials, European missionaries, and African rulers. Also includes important sections about the Church Missionary Society and the Sir Gerald Portal Uganda mission. Appendices contain original correspondence relating to the Portal mission.
