CSS Bombshell was formerly a 90' side-wheel steamer that carried cargo on the Erie Canal. The vessel entered Union Army service as a troop transport. On April 18, 1864 she was sunk in Albemarle Sound, NC by Confederate batteries. She was raised and commissioned in the CSN later that month. She was later re-captured by the USS Mattabesett and USS Sassacus on May 5, 1864, and was sent to NYC for repairs and further service. The vessel was steam powered, armed with five guns and had a crew of 37 officers and men.
