Ahkam ahl al-dhimma is a compilation of Islamic legal rulings relating to Jews and Christians under the Covenant of Protection, says Bosanquet, which guaranteed a degree of religious freedom and rights in return for the fulfillment of a range of obligations. It was written by Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziya (d. 751/1350), a Hanbali jurist and theological who was born and spent most of his life in Mamluk Damascus. In its modern editions, it serves as a standard reference to Islamic legal teaching about non-Muslims, and while she does not challenge this definition, she argues that it should not obscure its theological, polemical, literary, and political aspects. After exploring the text and content, she focuses on its handling of space in personal interaction, public performance, and children. Annotation ©2020 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR ()
