ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Item: Agnes Tait View of Sangre de Christo Mountains Old Watercolor Painting

Artist or Maker: Agnes Tait (1894–1981)

Provenance: From the Estate of Vicki Goebel. Goebel was a reputable New Mexico art dealer for close to 50 years.

Signed: Yes. Signed by Tait on the lower left.

Medium: Watercolor on paper

Painting's Size: 20" by 14"

Painting's Condition: There is a 7" by 9" moisture stain on the lower-third of the painting. It is located on the adobe wall and gate. It can be seen in the first three digital images, and there are close-ups of it in the 7th and 8th digital images. There is another 1" by 2" stain on the left, center edge of the field. According to AI, removing water stains (watermarks/blooms) from watercolor paintings involves re-wetting the area with clean water and gently lifting the pigment with a soft brush, paper towel, or cotton swab. For dried stains, lightly scrub with a damp Magic Eraser or a soft brush, working in gentle circles to lift pigment without damaging the paper fibers. I do not know whether their techniques work, as I have never tried them. So, there is no guarantee that their techniques work, and it is at your own risk if you decide to try them.

There is also brown toning on the right edge of the paper from sunlight and the top. Tait left part of the paper's edges unpainted. This painting will need restoration.

Framed Size: The thin wood frame measures 25.25" by 19.25".

Frame's Condition: The frame has a few minor nicks and scratches. It is much newer than the painting.

Ultraviolet Light Test: No inpainting. Tait's signature is original to the painting.

Additional Comments:

I am pleased to present this original watercolor by the famous listed American artist- Agnes Tait! Tait's work is on many prestigious collections such as the Library of Congress, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, among many others.

Tait was an influential American artist who became a prominent figure in the Santa Fe art community after moving there in 1941. The scene beautifully captures her "romantic realist" style, blending traditional landscape with intimate, domestic details like the adobe wall and open garden gate. Tait was known for her ability to render the specific light and geography of Northern New Mexico, often featuring the region's iconic red-hued cliffs and sprawling valley vistas.

She painted this Southwestern valley from above, looking past an old adobe wall. In front, open wooden gates let you spot bright purple and pink flowers, which stand out against the desert’s soft, earthy colors. The middle ground transitions into a lush, green basin filled with leafy trees and rolling fields, framed by the dramatic, red-hued cliffs and rugged foothills characteristic of Northern New Mexico.
In the distance, a soft, snow-capped mountain peak rises against a clear blue sky, creating a striking contrast between the warmth of the valley floor and the cold of the high-altitude summits. The location is most likely a view of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, in New Mexico.
Tait’s  style influenced many artists in Santa Fe and Taos. This watercolor highlights her special use of light and the wide-open feel of the high desert.
