Printing: First American Edition (1952), lack of "first edition" statement indicates this is an early printing but not a first printing.

Summary: Commonly referred to as The Diary of Anne Frank, this book is from the journals of a young teen during the two years her family and other Jewish residents hid in an attic during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam before being discovered and sent to Nazi concentration camps. It was later returned to her father Otto Frank, the only family member who survived the Holocaust, and has since been translated and published in over 70 languages.

Of note, this first American edition removed some of Anne’s original content related to sexuality that was restored in later editions. Those later full editions, along with the graphic novelization of the book, have been documented by the American Library Association as among the most frequently banned or challenged books in the U.S., and the book has been removed from school libraries and curricula - usually temporarily - by numerous U.S. school districts. DJ: The original dust jacket is present but in separate pieces (front cover, front flap, spine in two pieces, back flap, and back cover that features the facsimile of a page from Anne's diary). The front flap piece is price-clipped, and all the jacket pieces are quite brittle. However, the front and back cover pieces retain full color and image clarity. These were slipped inside the book when I bought it at a secondhand book store in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts and I've put them into acid-free archival bags which I’m storing flat separately from the book for a new owner to determine what to do with. It’s remarkable to me that someone took the time to slip these inside the book despite their condition, and I feel like it speaks to honoring the author and her story, even in pieces.

Book: The book itself is is in much better condition, though it still shows its age. The black cloth boards are solid and spine lettering legible. The cloth over the spine is a bit faded compared to the boards. There is wear at both ends of the spine with some fraying of the cloth at the head end. Light bumping to corners with a spot of cloth worn off over back top corner. There are a few small stains on the top edge of the texblock. Endpapers with photographs are intact and still look nice. Inside pages are tanned consistent with age, a few stains on the introduction page, no markings noted on pages. When I purchased the book the cloth cover was coming loose over the mull of the spine and the front hinge was starting to separate, which I partially repaired with a small amount of acid-free archival quality glue. You can see that the hinge is still starting as I didn't want to go farther with my amateur restoration skills. I have wrapped the book in an acid-free archival bag separately from the DJ pieces.

On a personal note, my Jewish grandmother and her sister were Holocaust refugees who escaped as teens from Berlin, traveling through through Amsterdam on their way to live with an aunt in New York City, while her father and other family members were murdered at Auschwitz. This is a very special book that I feel privileged to have found and saved.
