The steppe bison (Bison priscus) was one of the largest herbivores or plant-eaters in prehistory. This impressive colossus of the Ice Age, with a shoulder height of around 2 metres, weighed over 1,000 kilos. A herd of these stamping, snorting animals must have been an unforgettable sight on the bare steppes. Long extinct, the steppe bison lived in Europe and Asia and also in the west of North America.
