The Silktone Expander boldly expands the concept of a simple distortion box. Three knobs and a voice switch unlock a vast palette of thick, textured drives, from subtle harmonic emphasis to rich, gritty overdrive that makes your amp suddenly come alive.

The design draws inspiration from the aesthetics and feel of our Micronote series, and the quirky charm of old Japanese distortion boxes that we've recently become fascinated with. The look, feel, and even a part of the tonal DNA pay homage to that era while pushing it into new territory.

The first stage is a JFET-based second harmonic circuit that instantly adds thickness and depth to the sound. At its core is a germanium transistor circuit (designed with inspiration from classic 60s equipment) that produces a unique stickiness and rich tonal color. The output stage features a separate JFET that emulates the amplifier's first-stage tube, preserving the characteristic saturation and sweet tone of the first-stage tube even at lower volumes. Frankly, before adding the output stage, we almost didn't even include a volume knob. The sound quality at full volume was simply too superb… so we designed a dedicated circuit to guarantee comparable sound quality even at lower volumes.

The controls are minimal, yet deeply interactive.

Gain: From low-end, asymmetrical thickness to a medium-gain grind sound. Pushing it further results in smooth odd-order harmonics.

Choke: Creates everything from massive, rich bass to focused, aggressive tones.

Volume: Adjusts the overall balance without losing the feel of the amplifier's first-stage tube.

Fine-tune the tone with the 3-way voice switch:

Left = Dark and roll-off, ideal for high-gain settings.

Right = Bright, perfect for an always-on sparkle.

Center = Standard voice, colorful and balanced sound.

And its greatest feature is that while it can be heavily distorted when needed, the Expander truly shines as an always-on pedal. Setting "Choke" and "Gain" low, and placing the Volume around the 12 o'clock position, makes every sound louder, better, and more vibrant.
