It looks like there are two faces in the wood (knots) The piece is very solid and has been Polly urethaned to  keep it preserved, a hanger has been installed for a wall hanging display of this natural art piece..

Says "MAD" and has a date of what looks to be 12/01 on the back upper side (see pictures)
