Beautiful antique silverplate covered butter dish by Wm. A. Rogers, dating to approximately 1920–1930. This elegant early 20th-century table piece features a domed silverplate lid, ornate Rococo floral border tray, and the original pressed glass butter insert.

This particular butter dish belonged to my grandparents, making it a wonderful heirloom piece with genuine family history. It has been carefully preserved and remains a complete set with its original matching glass liner — something many antique butter dishes have lost over time.

The silver tray displays a decorative rosette and scrolling leaf border typical of the Rococo Revival style popular in American tableware during the 1915–1935 period. These covered butter dishes were commonly used in formal dining rooms and hotel service during the early 20th century when butter was kept on the table under a dome.

The underside bears the WM A ROGERS mark, a well-known American silverplate maker that operated under the International Silver Company beginning in the early 1900s.

Historical Note

Covered butter dishes like this were a standard part of American formal dining service from the late Victorian era through the 1930s, before widespread refrigeration changed how butter was stored. The domed lid protected butter while allowing it to be served elegantly at the table.

Today these antique silverplate butter dishes are popular with collectors of vintage tableware, farmhouse kitchen décor, Victorian serving pieces, and early American silverplate.
