Antique Thai Bronze Blind Buddha Amulet
This is well known as a Thai amulet called "Phra Pidta", often nicknamed the Blind Buddha or Close Eyed Buddha. They are traditional and can be interesting historically and spiritually.
This figure shows a seated monk or enlightened being covering his face. The gesture symbolizes blocking out worldly distractions and turning inward toward meditation and enlightenment. It is not usually meant to represent the historic Buddha himself, but often a revered enlightened monk or arahant associated with deep meditation.
People in Thailand traditionally carry or wear these amulet because there are believed to offer protection, encouragement of mindfulness and calmness, in detachment from greed. These have been around for centuries. There are more variations on this with four or six hands.
This piece will sit upright in sturdy fashion, but is at home when carried on your body. Another of the same quality is listed on my sight.
This is quite handsome though these photos are taken by flash.
