Cossack Mamay (also Cossack bandura player, Ukrainian Kozak Mamay) is one of the most popular Ukrainian images of the Cossack knight (knight) of the 17th-19th centuries, the ideal of the “Ukrainian dream” of this era.

For the first time it appears in the Ukrainian folk puppet theater, the so-called nativity scene. Paintings with the image of the Cossack Mamai have appeared since the middle of the 18th century. The symbol became such a popular and apt deep image among the people that it even competed with icons.
