"Chaos & Color" is an album bursting with explosive classic rock guitars, outstanding harmonies and Heep's famously generous keyboard foundation. Unsurprisingly, this album received an extra boost during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been as bizarre for Uriah Heep as it has been for humanity in general.
“The album title reflects that we were in chaotic times of being locked down, tours being canceled, businesses collapsing and all the chaos that was being thrown into the world,” explains Mick Box, the venerable and spirited founding member of Uriah Heep, “and as far as I could see, the only colorful thing people had was music. She helped so many people get through these difficult years by using the power and power of music to make the bad times not quite so bad.«
There was still the looming specter of protocols and rules to follow in mid-2021 as the world tried to get back on its feet. Heep slowly found their way to Chapel Studios in London in the summer of 2021 as restrictions were temporarily lifted, working with Jay Ruston (Anthrax, Corey Taylor, Black Star Riders) once again.
“Jay was completely on board with what we were trying to achieve in the studio,” says Box. »We are a band that has a fantastic heritage and to continue that tradition it was crucial that the band all played in the studio at the same time. Jay understood that and brought out the best in us as a band and in the individual musicians, giving us some amazing sounds.«
Led by Box, it's no surprise that themes of light, love and ultimately positivity run like a common thread throughout the album's nine tracks.
"Save Me Tonight" is a powerful, melodic rock song that we chose as the first single and opening track of the album," says Mick Box, "it's made for rock radio and will certainly be included in our new setlist in 2023."
“Save Me Tonight comes from a place of frustration and helplessness,” adds co-writer and bassist Rimmer, “we lived through these unprecedented last few years but clung to the hope that we would all see each other again! Once again, working with Jeff Scott Soto was a natural and very creative experience and the perfect platform for me to express these feelings and continue Heep's legacy.«
"One Nation, One Sun" is a journey into the world of balladic contemplation, "Fly Like An Eagle" takes the listener on a journey of meditation, while "Closer To Your Dreams" is a rallying cry for all rockers to get out there and do it, with Shaw imploring: "So many have tried but slipped away/Now it's time for you to have your say." Throughout the album, Bernie Shaw's timeless vocals deftly stand alongside the phenomenal artistry the band (Mick Box - guitar, Phil Lanzon - keyboard, Russell Gilbrook - drums, Dave Rimmer - bass) and rounds off the band's extraordinary achievements.
Produced by Jay Ruston and produced by Pieter Rietkerk, "Chaos & Color" is a superb album of high quality hard rock from the pioneers of the genre who continue to produce top quality material. Old fans will be reinvigorated, while new fans will surely find "Chaos & Color" an extraordinary discovery.
