Still 100% Ozzy
Ozzy Osbourne made his fans wait ten years for his last album. With its successor, things went much faster and so "Patient Number 9" is released only two years after the last album, appropriately on September 9th.
On the one hand, the Prince of Darkness was able to spend the time in the studio that he had planned for his big “No More Tours II” farewell tour. On the other hand, we hear that Ozzy Osbourne was so excited about working with producer Andrew Watt on the last album that he couldn't wait to collaborate again.
"Patient Number 9" has 13 new Ozzy songs to offer and, with a playing time of just over an hour, is pleasingly generous. The list of well-known guest musicians who have stepped up to the plate is also full to bursting. The opening title track, which is also the album's first single, has a real top-class artist on board in Jeff Beck. Mr. Osbourne also sees it this way: »Having someone like Jeff Beck on my album is just incredible, a great honor. There is no other guitarist who plays like Jeff and his solo on 'Patient Number 9' makes your jaw drop." Other guests on the six strings include Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Ozzy intimate Zakk Wylde, Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age), Eric Clapton and Black Sabbath's Toni Iommi, who incidentally appears on an Ozzy Osbourne solo album for the first time helps out. JIMMY Page was also asked to work together, but politely declined.
The bass work is shared by Ozzy Osbourne's former bassist Rob Trujillo (now Metallica) and Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan. The drums on “Patient Number 9” were played by Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Taylor Hawkins, the recently deceased drummer from the Foo Fighters.
But most importantly, of course, "Patient Number 9" is a 100% Ozzy Osbourne album, despite the large number of people involved. The typical Ozzy sound is unmistakably present, as the pre-released singles make that clear. We can only hope that the Prince of Darkness can present the new songs live to his fans soon.
