These Raymond Cooke designed KEF speakers from the 80’s are classics and collectible. They are definitely worth servicing and keeping in tip top shape so they can continue to sing the high notes.

It is very important to get the tweeters cleaned of old dried ferrofluid and fresh ferrofluid added to avoid damaging the voice coils. These are very delicate and should be done every 10 -15 years depending on the environment.

Over time, the ferrofluid can degrade, becoming thick or even solid, which can negatively impact the tweeter's performance.

Factors Affecting Lifespan:

Ferrofluid Quality:

The initial quality of the ferrofluid is crucial. Lower-quality fluids may use poor carrier fluids that don't last as long.

Environmental Conditions:

High temperatures or humidity can accelerate ferrofluid degradation.

Speaker Usage:

High volume and prolonged use can increase heat and stress on the ferrofluid, potentially shortening its lifespan.

Symptoms of Ferrofluid Degradation:

Dull or Blurry Sound:

The high frequencies may sound less clear or detailed.

Loss of Sensitivity:

The tweeter might produce less volume or require more power to achieve the same volume.

Voice Coil Stuck:

The ferrofluid may have become too thick or solid, preventing the voice coil from moving freely.

Any tweeters received and found to be damaged prior to servicing will be returned without service and shipped back at item owners expense.
