Working Principle 

The power steering pump is typically driven by the engine via a serpentine belt. As the engine runs, the belt turns the pump pulley, which rotates internal components (vanes or rollers) inside the pump housing. This rotation creates hydraulic pressure by drawing power steering fluid from the reservoir and forcing it through the steering gear or rack-and-pinion assembly. The pressurized fluid assists in moving the steering mechanism, reducing the effort required from the driver.

When the steering wheel is turned, the system directs fluid to the appropriate side of the steering gear. When driving straight with no steering input, fluid recirculates within the pump with minimal pressure.

Installation Tips

1. Fluid Drain – Drain power steering fluid into a suitable container before removing the pump. Dispose of old fluid properly according to local regulations.

2. Hose Marking – Mark the pressure and return hoses before removal to ensure correct reconnection. Pressure hose typically has a larger fitting or specific marking.

3. Surface Preparation  – Ensure mounting surfaces are clean and free of debris for proper alignment.

4. Pulley Transfer – If your new pump does not include a pulley, transfer the pulley from the old pump using the proper puller and installer tools. Never hammer the pulley onto the new pump.

5. Bolt Torque – Tighten mounting bolts and hose fittings to manufacturer specifications. Overtightening can crack the pump housing or damage fittings.

6. Belt Inspection – Inspect the drive belt for cracks, wear, or glazing. Replace if necessary to ensure proper belt tension and pump drive.

Bleeding Procedure

Raise the front of the vehicle so the wheels are off the ground.

With the engine off, turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock several times.

Check fluid level and refill as needed.

Start the engine and turn the wheel lock to lock again, checking for noise and smooth operation.

Repeat until fluid is clear of bubbles and steering operates smoothly.
