The following minimal items must be replaced before your replacement engine is started for the first time:
FRESH ENGINE OIL AS SPECIFIED
FRESH COOLANT (IF WATER COOLED)
REPLACE OIL DRAIN PLUG GASKET
NEW OEM OR EQUIVALENT OIL FILTER
FIRST START PROCEDURE, PRIME OIL SYSTEM
ENSURE ALL FLUIDS ARE AT APPROPRIATE LEVELS
REMOVE FUEL PUMP FUSE, MAKE SURE MOTORCYCLE WILL NOT START WHEN STARTER IS ENGAGED, REMOVE SPARK PLUGS IF NECESSARY.
LOOSEN OIL FILTER TO OBTAIN GAP BETWEEN FILTER AND FILTER HOUSING, PLACE DRIP PAN
CRANK ENGINE WITH ELECTRIC STARTER UNTIL OIL FLOWS FROM FILTER HOUSING.
TORQUE OIL FILTER TO RECOMMENDED TORQUE VALUE
CONTINUE CRANKING ENGINE WITH FUEL PUMP FUSE REMOVED UNTIL OIL PRESSURE LIGHT EXTINGUISHES OR CORRECT PRESSURE IS READ ON AN EXTERNAL GAUGE.
REINSTALL FUEL PUMP FUSE (SPARK PLUGS), START MOTORCYCLE NORMALLY, PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO OIL PRESSURE GAUGE AND LIGHT.
IF OIL PRESSURE GAUGE DOES NOT READ IMMEDIATELY OR OIL LIGHT IS VISIBLE FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME WHILE ENGINE IS RUNNING, IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE AND INVESTIGATE THE REASON BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO RESTART
Motorcycle engines are designed with very tight tolerances and will not tolerate a lack of oil pressure for any amount of time. We want your installation to be successful the first time!
