Early, previously unreleased Bowie recordings from 1969 in a 1-LP box!

The series of releases of previously unreleased recordings to mark the 50th anniversary. Anniversary of David Bowie's first hit Space Oddity continues! After the recently released four-single box Spying Through A Keyhole and the Clareville Grove Demos with three further singles, The "Mercury" Demos is now another treasure from the archive of early Bowie recordings. The album The "Mercury" Demos contains 10 Bowie tracks that he recorded live on a Revox tape machine in his apartment in the spring of 1969. Back then, Bowie was accompanied by John “Hutch” Hutchinson on guitar and harmonica.

The demo version of Space Oddity included on the album, which is also included in the Sound & Vision box set, appears here for the first time in its proper context. The nine other recordings on the album are all previously unreleased. In addition to the Bowie originals, the session includes the Roger Bunn song Life Is A Circus (which is also on the Clareville Demos in an earlier demo version) and the Lesley Duncan composition Love Song, which Elton Johns later recorded for his album "Tumbleweed Connection". Bowie's own composition Conversation Piece is announced as a "new song" and Janine contains a 19 second short section in which the melody of the Beatles song "Hey Jude" is sung.

The session is the basic recording for the set list of the duo "Bowie & Hutch" at the time and was recorded on tape at the request of Mercury Records A&R Calvin Mark Lee, who wanted to send the tracks to his boss Bob Reno. Both Calvin and Bob are addressed over the course of the 41-minute recording. The demos became the key to David's record deal with Mercury Records.
