This classic work describes the many researches which in 1923 won Professor Millikan the Nobel Prize for Physics "for his works on the uniform electric charge and the photo-electric effect." First published in 1917, revised in 1924, and reproduced in part in 1935 under the title: Electrons (+ and —), Protons, Photons, Neutrons, and Cosmic Rays, the original book is still of immense historical and practical importance, and it is the 1917 version that has here been reprinted.

Professor DuMond was a close associate of Millikan during much of his scientific career. His introduction to this reprint pays tribute to Millikan both as a man and as a scientist and conveys something of the enthusiasm and vitality with which researchers in physics were permeated during the first decades of this century.
