The Czech LT-38 was one of the most successful products of the pre-war Czech armaments industry. When the Germans took over in 1939 the Germans redesignated the vehicle Panzer 38(t). By 1941, having been initially issued to the 7th and 8th Panzer Divisions, the Pz Kpfw 38(t) represented nearly 25%25 of the total Wehrmacht tank strength. Mounting a Skoda 37mm A7 gun and a 7.92mm MG, the Panzer 38(t) was taken out of frontline service in 1942 by which time 1,168 had been produced.  The Chassis was subsequently used to mount various guns including the 15cm sIG Heavy Infantry Gun in the Grille, the 75cm Pak40 Anti Tank Gun in the Marder III and another 75mm Anti tank gun as the Hetzer.

The Ausf F had improved armour protection from 25mm to 50mm as a result of the experience of crews in Poland. The Pz Bef Wg 38(t) Ausf F was a standard Pz Kpfw 38(t) Ausf F converted to a command role with a rear mouted aerial mast.
