Filmmaking career: His career is primarily focused on directing and screenwriting. He directed films such as The Last Starfighter (1984), The Boy Who Could Fly (1986), Dennis the Menace (1993), and Major Payne (1995).

Screenwriting: He co-wrote the screenplay for John Carpenter's 1981 film Escape from New York.
