Bayezid II was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1481 to 1512 CE. During his reign, Bayezid consolidated the Ottoman Empire and thwarted a pro-Safavid rebellion. Bayezid evacuated Sephardi Jews from Spain following the fall of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada and the proclamation of the Alhambra Decree. He then resettled them throughout Ottoman lands, especially in Salonica. The later years of his reign were filled with internal struggle between his sons, Selim and Ahmet, over who would succeed him to the throne. With the support of the Janissaries, Selim succeeded in forcing his father to abdicate in 1512 CE. Bayezid II died shortly there after and was buried in the Bayezid Mosque in Istanbul.
